Cluster over WAN in HA

Hello, I am looking at a solution for a small college which could use proxmox for the main MS AD and File server in HA Mode. They have three main sites so one plan would be to configure three proxmox servers into a cluster and add HA mode to the files server and main AD.

If there are issues at one of the main sites then all the other sites will still be able to logon to the windows domain and have access to files although how uptodate they are might vary. I dont think they is a lot of data activity and we just talking about word, excel and powerpoint files.

What are the issues of HA over WAN? We might consider 2 x internet connections at each site.

Sorry this is another 'possible solution type question' one day I will win a tender!! ;-)

Again thanks to the proxmox team for the support. If this on has wheels it is likely we would subscribe to support.

Regards

Stephen

clustering (HA) does not work over WAN (unless you have a high speed / low latency connection).

OK. HA and failover is different although HA inherently has failover. Could I just do failover over wan? But if you imagine the senerios it would probably just a be a nightmare as the same data gets modified DIFFERENTLY on two more sites as in the case of just the site links going down. When it all comes backup what the hell are you going to do with the data!! I imagine nightmares

Thanks

I would go with three domain controllers(resara server) in a cluster via vpn (openvpn) using freenas at each location for file storage. I would setup zfs-snapshot with replication on the freenas to achieve the redundancy you are looking for. Snapshots can be setup to run every 5 minutes so your data would be no more than 10 minutes old for a return to point. Everything in the list works well under proxmox and everything is opensource. As a plus everything has commercial support available. Just my two cents.

OK. Thanks for the advice. It all looks good. Not sure about zfs-snapshot Unison might be better as there could be different files at different locations if the swan was down for anmy length of time.

They are not something I have used but I like the look of resara and freenas
