Cluster network sharing with other traffic on 10gb

Hi,

I am trying to make decisions on the new Proxmox VE deployment. My servers have both multiple 10gb and multiple 1gb ports. I understand it's mentioned frequently in Proxmox docs that cluster network is sensitive to latency and dedicated physical links are recommended. However, I prefer not to maintain separate connections for 1gb just for the cluster network. Have anybody had experience/recommendation about putting the cluster network on the 10gb sharing with other traffic (including VM and NFS storage) separated by VLANs? Based on my current VMware environment, it's unlikely 10gb will be saturated or introduce high latency due to other loads.

Of course it is a good idea to gather own experiences. Sometimes. Usually I do recommend this. Another approach is to learn from others...

(Probably) nobody here will recommend to use a single wire for everything. Especially as you already have the required equipment. And no, VLANs are not a solution for this specific problem area, at least not without other additional tools like bandwidth limiters.

While dedicated physical links are generally recommended for the cluster network to minimize latency, using VLANs to segregate traffic on your 10GB ports could work if you monitor the load closely. It's good to hear that your current VMware environment handles the load well. Have you considered running some tests or benchmarks to ensure the setup meets your performance needs?
