Cluster Creation on Node with VMs already on it– Is This Supported?

Hi all,

I’m preparing a migration from a temporary Proxmox node to a new, permanent Proxmox node.

Currently, the temporary node is running several VMs. My goal is to migrate these VMs over to the new node.

My plan is to:
  • Create a cluster on the temporary node (which already has VMs running on it, the vm's can be turned off),
  • Add the new, empty node to this cluster,
  • Then migrate the VMs from the temporary node to the new node,
  • Finally, remove the temporary node from the cluster, leaving the permanent node as a standalone system.

My main question:
Is it supported to create a cluster on a node that already has VMs running, and then add an empty node to that cluster?

I’ve read that you cannot add a node with existing VMs to an existing cluster, but I want to confirm that the other way around (starting the cluster on the node with VMs) is supported.

Thanks in advance for clarifying!
