Can't backup 1 VM to Proxmox Backup Server

Hello everyone,

I'm running into a strange issue, i'm trying to backup my VM's to a remote PBS, everything it's fine, except for 1 machine, here is the log

i'm using PBS version 3.4.7, and i can't really find what's wrong with it.....

Anyone have some ideas? Consider that the same machine on a USB drive backup just fine.....

I also had a similar problem and did not find the solution at first.

For testing I disabled fs-freeze flag (uncheck "Freeze/thaw guest filesystems on backup for consistency" in QEMU Guest agent section of VM options). Backup went well.

Then I tried to rule out what is different at this VM compared to other ones. After a few hours I found out that the error comes up because DNS resolution is not working while VM is frozen. The VM is my DNS resolver in my homelab.

And PVE is using a DNS name for reaching PBS, see excerpt from /etc/pve/storage.cfg

Sorry for the late reply, yeah you were right, that VM host pi-hole which is my main DNS resolver, i've switched the Proxmox DNS server to the Google ones to test and it works flawlessly

Hi,

Since other VMs back up fine to the same PBS, this looks VM-specific, not a PBS issue.

The error happens before the backup task starts, which often points to:
  • Corrupted incremental / dirty bitmap state
  • Snapshot issue on that VM
  • Small config difference compared to the working VMs
Things to try:
  • Remove any snapshots and retry
  • Delete existing backups for VM 100 on PBS and force a full backup
  • Disable incremental backup for this VM
  • Temporarily disable the guest agent and test
  • Compare qm config 100 with a working VM
If it still fails, try a stop-mode backup or clone the VM and test the clone.

USB backup working confirms storage + VM data are OK.
