Hello,
To backup a vm on a LVM storage I follow the instructions on the wiki page "storage Model". I choose "LVM group with local backing" using a 1T partition of an usb disk. It work fine and I got in Proxmox a new storage : id=hitachi_usb, type=LVM, content=Images.
Next I select the tab "Backup" of my vm (non running) to save and click on "Backup now".
Here is my problem : the drop down list of "storage" is empty.
My first question : do I miss something evident ?
My second question : is it useful to create an empty vm in this storage as said in the StorageModel page:
Now you can create the KVM VM:
Type: Fully virtualized (KVM)
Disk storage: usb (lvm)
Disk space (GB): 1

Hello

That is normal because lvm can only store raw vm disk images... So not vzdump backup file...

You can manually create a lvm on your USB disk, then format it, then add it as a directory to pve...

Ok, I agree with that. But how can I affect the raw type to my storage. Actually his content is defined as "Images" without my will.

proxmox dot that for you, when you create a lvm storage he knows that he can only put raw image... if you try to create VM and select this storage for the vm disk i will be locked to raw ;)

Yes I do that and he makes me a raw device.
But my question is always : why my local usb storage won't appear in the drop down menu "storage" when I want to do a LVM backup ?
I have a correct LVM storage and i can't use it like describe in the wiki's tuto .

OK. So the only way to make backup is with Directory storage or NFS storage ?
I've been confused by the title "LVM Groups with Local Backing".
Sorry and thank you.

Hello

PVE can do a local backup on any files system that has been formatted with ext3, ext4, and sure with some file systems more.

If you have a filesystem into a LVM partition (as ext3, ext4, etc.) of course that you can use it as repository of your backups.

But anyway, you need previously define in the GUI of PVE the repositories enabled for to store the backups, and only after of it, you will can use it.

Ok, it's solved for me.
But i'm despite of not being able to transform an existing qcow2 disk into a raw disk used as a Logical Volume into a VG.
Thanks to all of you.
