Best practices for running Citrix NetScaler ADC (VPX) on Proxmox VE? VirtIO crashes under backup load

Hi everyone,

we are migrating Citrix NetScaler ADC (VPX) from VMware to Proxmox VE and I’m looking for best-practice VM settings.

On VMware the VPX has always run fine with:
  • NIC: E1000
  • Disk controller: LSI Logic

On Proxmox, the only setup where the VPX currently boots and works for me is:
  • Disk: VirtIO SCSI (single)
  • NIC: VirtIO network adapter
However, under heavy load (especially during backups), the VM crashes or becomes unresponsive, and I suspect this is related to VirtIO not being properly supported for this FreeBSD-based appliance.

So my questions:
  1. Which SCSI controller and NIC model are recommended for NetScaler ADC VPX on Proxmox (ideally equivalent to VMware’s LSI + E1000)?
  2. Which OSType do you use for VPX in Proxmox (since there is no FreeBSD option)?
  3. Any known issues or best practices regarding backups / high network load with this setup?
I’m mainly looking for a stable, migration-friendly configuration that doesn’t crash during backups.

Thanks!

Jan
