Hello,

I have setup a backup für my two virtual machines, which runs once per week at night. Tonight it startet writing some backup files to my NAS, but to my surprise one of the backups seems way to small.

I downloaded a big Linux ISO with 5GB on one of the virtual machines, the file was written to a SSD drive. The backup file created is below 1.5GB so the ISO seems to be skipped. The log of the backup shows no error.

Here are my current backup settings:

Attached you can find the log of the backup. The ISO was stored on scsi1 which clearly should be included in the backup.

Does anyone have an idea, why this ISO was not added to the backup file?

Thank you!

To exactly which VM did you download that ISO?

Your attached log only shows the backup for VM 101, which is 1.44GB . How big is the backup for VM 100 (or other VM/s)? Even for one backup job, you will have separate log entries for each VM/LXC backup, with its' accompanying file backup size.

You must also consider the sparseness/compression for that ISO, although I doubt this is the only contributing factor. How big was the backup for that specific VM before the ISO download?

The ISO was downloaded to the VM 101, both backups (for 100 and 101) are less than 2GB.
It was the initial backup so I have no comparison to the backup before the download.

At first I thought the backup was missing the SSD (scsi1) but it is clearly mentioned in the log.

Try restoring that backup, to a different VMID (unused) & see if it contains that ISO.

As you know, backup snapshot mode uses the GA (which must be configured correctly both in the VM & in Proxmox) is the mode you selected. Maybe try the stop mode & compare the size.

I restarted the jobs manually and this time it took way longer (20 mins), this time everything seems to be backed up correctly. While the backup of VM 100 was exactly as big as tonight, the backup of VM 101 increased dramatically. I haven‘t change anything just restarted the backup, so I have no clue why it didn‘t work tonight but I guess it should work now.

Thank you for your help!
