Any experience in importing Windows 2008 R2 (64bit) vmdk to KVM?

Hello,

I have here a 20GB vmdk file, already converted with qemu-img into the raw format because my images are stored into a iscsi lvm.
The image is starting but then W2008 starts Autorepair because it found some system- and disk problems.

After 20 hours of repairing I stopped the machine.

Do anyone have the same or similar situation? Could it be because there are no KVM drivers in the system? I've read about some drivers what should be installed to a KVM Windows machine.

Thx for any hints.

Regards

Ben

Hi Bemar,

You use raw image file, but what kind of disk, ide or virtio ? (SCSI is not yet avalaible for windows AFAIK).

If you use IDE, did you apply the ide registry patch before migrating the VM ? See :
http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE

If it was a vmdk image file, the VM was probably using SCSI controller ?

If you use virtio, it won't work either. You shoud begin with IDE, add a virtio stoarage, and install virtio drivers, then remove first disk, and reintroduce it as virtio...

Hello Alain,

I'm using IDE in the KVM. I didn't applied the registry Patch. For what is it for?

I don't know if it was a SCSI Controller. The old VMWare server doesn't exist anymore. Seems I have to install VMWare Player.

Hi Bemar,

The IDE patch is to to enable the use of IDE controllers. If the VM used a SCSI controller, and it is more than likely for a Vmware VM, they are not written in the registry, so it does not recognized the IDE controller. Yes, you should install Wmware player, and try to add this registry pach, before moving to Proxmox (also uninstall vmware tools, if they were installed).
