I have a cluster with backups configured which stores the backups onto network NFS storage.
I was looking at the backup server a while back and now am wondering what the benefit of it is?

If I understand correctly, the backup server is built into a cluster but it could also be used stand alone to back up not only guests but the hosts and other servers, even bare metal from what I'm reading.

Can someone enlighten me please.

Thank you.

One of the major advantages of PBS is listed straight on the main product page:
Code:
By supporting incremental, fully deduplicated backups, Proxmox Backup Server significantly reduces network load and saves valuable storage space.

In the end the usability is in the eye of the beholder. Some will be perfectly happy with vzdump, others (especially those used to Veeam and VMware) will appreciate PBS.
