Can you ping yourself with an 8000 mtu? I'd blame the switch not being enabled for jumbo frames.

try to ping with with a size of 8972 - you have to substract the header size (28 bytes) in linux. If this doesn't work, or it complains about fragmentation, you probably need to look at the jumbo frames config on your switch.

Can you ping each host with a high mtu?

I was able to get the 4.3.7 drivers to compile under 4.15.18-27-pve, however I had to edit license.c to change MODULE_LICENSE to GPL instead of Proprietary, otherwise I can't get the source code to compile.
