Bcache in NVMe for 4K and fsync. Are IOPS limited?

As a follow up -- did just that, running ceph on top of bcache for the last 12 months, zero issues. The access times are great (thank you NVME) and the rebuild times are much faster.

CEPH 17.2.7 - "ceph device ls" is wrong

...with it, really liked it, but the fact it's going away kept me from making it my first choice. Those two things aren't really related. BCACHE is an underlying filesystem driver (it's been in the linux kernel since 3.10 - in 2013) and allows you to use faster devices (SSD/NVME) to cache for...

CEPH 17.2.7 - "ceph device ls" is wrong

I only heard bad things about using bcache. For example: "Cache tiering will degrade performance for most workloads. Users should use extreme caution before using this feature." Also "Cache tiering has been deprecated in the Reef release as it has lacked a maintainer for a very long time. This...

CEPH 17.2.7 - "ceph device ls" is wrong

...Old device are still present - some sort of cleanup will solve that. 2. NEW devices are missing :lightbulb: -- my lab pool is running CEPH on bcache - so I'm guessing CEPH can't reach down to the actual drive serial numbers if that matters. I can't see why it would, since 99.99% of CEPH is...

Why did I divide an NVME disk into 6 partitions on ProxmoxBackup Server 3.1-2, cache 6 HDD disks using bcache, and use the command zpool create - o ashift=12 pbs-M7-pro01 raidz/dev/bcache0/dev/bcache1/dev/bcache2/dev/bcache3/dev/bcache4/dev/bcache5- f to create a ZFS pool? Request Kernel Patch - bcache

AFAIK, it's a vanilla Ubuntu LTS kernel with some patches (e.g. ZFS). Please refer to the commits.

    Request Kernel Patch - bcache

@LnxBil bcache has been integrated in the kernel for a long time. Does the PVE kernel have no further customizations beyond the Ubuntu LTS maintained kernels?

    Request Kernel Patch - bcache

The proxmox kernel (unified for all producs) is based on the Ubuntu LTS kernel so when bcache will be integrated in the Ubuntu LTS kernel, it'll be also available in PVE.

    Request Kernel Patch - bcache

Team, We are hitting an issue in bcache that seems to be part of the Linux Kernel that has a pending patch set: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-bcache/20230307134852.8288-1-mingzhe.zou@easystack.cn/T/#u However, it's not merged upstream, and even launchpad has something open for this...

HowTo: Proxmox VE 7 With Software RAID-1

Main issue is VM caching mode, which i never use in default value "none".Some scenarios are limited by hw\budget\etc.I would use officially supported btrfs, but didn't find yet proper instructions how to add ssd caching in raid1 with bcache for existing btrfs raid1 of pair hdd.

    ZFS looking for guidance

L2ARC does not perform that well as any other cache layer like bcache or flashcache, so you have to try. I tried it once and it wasn't that good. Put more RAM in the machine, it'll help MUCH, MUCH more.

    Delete a BTRFS bcache disk

Ok, I had BTRFS up and running just fine. Then I decided to add a cache SSD using make-bcache -C /dev/sdg but eventually worked out that this would not work as a caching disk needs to be added at the time of creating my BTRFS RAID10. But how do I safely remove /dev/sdg? I'm running Linux...

PVE GUI doesn't recognize kernel bcache device?

Hi, yes, there is a feature request now: https://bugzilla.proxmox.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4679 Unfortunately, nobody had time to work on it yet.

PVE GUI doesn't recognize kernel bcache device?

Hello Adrian. Have you opened an issue on the bug Tracker? I have been using bcache+drbd+pacemaker+iscsi for at last 7 years as the shared storage for the vm's in a vmware vcenter 6.5 setup. It works great! Hope Proxmox gets (gui) support for bcache for ceph, as is really a very good...

...This will however only apply to newly written blocks and the on-disk- DEDUP-table will still be there and always be part of the ZFS pool. bcache is possible with EVERY filesystem, but may be good or bad with respect to data integrity depending on the settings. snapshots are also missing.
