I would prefer a ZFS solution.
1) It is a bit faster in some cases but only if you have enough RAM.
2) You can safe a lot of storage with the compression and deduplication features of ZFS. I have ~15 TB server backups on a 6 TB ZFS storage.
3) ZFS is safer than ext3/ext4 because of the checksum...
Both is important.
You have not enough RAM as soon as your VM or your host starts to use SWAP (real use, low swap usage is normal) and you get I/O performance issues.
I know phoronix is not a good source but you will find much other sources on google...

Use 32bit if and ONLY if you have not enough RAM. Because 64bit needs more RAM and not enough RAM = massive performance issues.
