You are right OpenVZ can't be stored on iSCSI out of the box with Proxmox 1.4. As far as I understand there is an issue with some OpenVZ support tools that do not support the new storage model. I am not totally sure of the issues, maybe a developer could comment more on exactly what is needed...
Keep the OpenVZ stuff. The performance is worth it alone. Proxmox VE initially attracted me because of the ability to do both OpenVZ and KVM. I am sure I am not alone in this.
If it goes KVM only there are other tools out their that do the same thing so Proxmox VE may get lost in the noise...
It would be nice to be able to set the MTU of the interface via the web interface to enable jumbo frames. Maybe just a check box to click to enable jumbo frames. It is easy enough to do manually now so not a huge deal but something that would be nice to have.
I am interested in your setup as well. What does your Proxmox Host network configuration look like? I am having trouble with making vmbr0 to use a bonded interface. Also why use mode 5 over mode 6 or 802.3ad?
