PBS testimonial (hardware requirements are a joke)

Not what I am seeing in the real world. Let's start with a fresh VM where nothing is already backed up: zpool iostat poolBackup 1 capacity operations bandwidth pool alloc free read write read write ---------- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----...

Feedback: lack of host backup has me reconsidering use of Proxmox

What features are you setting up on your hosts that are such great effort to deploy? Can you give specifics? My $.02, ymmv. As someone who recently migrated and expanded from a 3 node Vsphere cluster to 5 node Proxmox cluster and moved from Veeam to PBS. Changing my perspective on hosts made...

High iowait during NFS transfers on VM

note that you can use HA with local zfs replicated between node. (but you can loss the last non synced datas snapshot). you could have better resilience than a single NAS (or do you have 2 truenas nodes with a shared array ?) About your truenas, what are the ssd model ? enterprise ssd wih...

IO Pressure Stall issue after upgrade to 9.1

Hi All, I'm experiencing the same problem but don't know if it's 9.1 related. I just made a test lab cluster with 6 x NUC. They are literally doing nothing, just idling. I wanted to test ZFS replication , so I have installed everything on a ZFS partition. Every nuc has the same hardware and the...

First Proxmox homelab build - sanity check on hardware, service layout, and storage

You are welcome: I noticed that I missed to link the thread where lnxbil described his way to use special_small_blocks, so I edited my post to link it: https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/zfs-metadata-special-device.129031/post-699290 Please note that a dedicated OS mirror is helpful but not...

[TUTORIAL] Understanding QCOW2 Risks with QEMU cache=none in Proxmox

To be fair to Proxmox it is documented that cache=none does not fully disable write caching here. For that you need 'writethrough' or 'directsync', but expect absolutely horrific write performance on non enterprise SSDs and all spindles. https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Performance_Tweaks Expected...

Recommended hardware for modest upgrade of 3 PVE nodes

Dear all, I am running PVE in a what i consider being a rather typical "IT nerd" setup, a 3-node-Cluster on consumer hardware. Private use only. 2 nodes are built identically: AMD 3200G (2C/4T) APU, 32GB DDR4 RAM, M2 NVMe for OS, 2x4TB HDD for storage (connected to SATA onboard), GbE NIC 1...

    Network hickups during backup

Fleecing on or off does not make a difference. There is no PBS instance involved. Storage is single NVME (2TB KIOXIA XG8 Series) with LVM volume. Graphs below definately show the issues, mouse cursor is at start of backup job. Memory usage is also pretty high: 87.23% (54.24 GiB of 62.18 GiB)

    Network hickups during backup

So..., with fleecing enabled everything is fine? Then leave it turned on and call it a day ;-) Some cheap consumer disks (SSD and NVMe) go easily into a "too slow"/"stuttering"/"high delay" mode. When such a device is really busy to supply the data to a backups job it may not be able to...

Einfachster Weg das root zfs zu übertragen?

Hallo!

ZFS mirror on 2x Crucial T705 (PCIe 5.0) causing txg_sync hangs under write load – no NVMe errors in dmesg

    Backup Recommendation

However, to be fair, I could imagine that there are probably significant differences between different consumer SSDs. So far, I’ve always used Samsung Evos (TLC) and, in one case, a Pro (MLC), and I haven’t managed to kill any of them yet, at least not with my workloads, even with ZFS. So I’d...

    Backup Recommendation

I think power-loss protection is somewhat overrated as well in a home lab, particularly if the budget is limited. With modern file systems, and modern branded SSDs it's not strictly necessary, provided you can accept the loss of any data that was "in flight" when the power went out. The file...

How to Reduce SSD Wearout in Proxmox?

Watch out when doing PBS backups with that setting. If I remember correctly, PBS makes use of that. To get back to your initial question "How to reduce wear out" the correct answer IMHO would be: Don't worry! Others here recommended PLP drives, but in reality most workloads are perfectly fine...
