SSD Samsung 990 Evo Failed Status

...Where I strongly embrace your point is when some products deeply change without changing the model name, like it was the case for the CMR to SMR migration of WD Red non-Plus/non-Pro HDD (and others). These sh*tty decisions impede on the quality-trust towards the maker. And trust is far faster...

    HW for Proxmox and NAS

Appreciate your feedback. I understand that you recommend to keep two separate PC's considering redundancy, makes sense, haven't thought about it. I could then use older motherboard with 8GB RAM for TrueNAS. I just need to find efficient PSU and hopefully low HDD power usage when idle (besides...

    HW for Proxmox and NAS

...two smaller identical PVE nodes and one failing, you could move the most important VMs and hardware to the working node. Make sure not to buy SMR HDDs. And for ZFS (which TrueNAS uses) it is also recommended to have ECC RAM. Otherwise you can never trust the checksumming to tell you if there...

    VM and CT migration

Does the destination drive use QLC flash memory or SMR? Then is can take a long time for the writes to actually finish.

VM Unraid - HD Discs not spinning up

Hmm, WD Red went SMR a couple of years ago, so you should be wary of performance slowdowns. Red Pros should be OK, but I stopped buying WD entirely over their shenanigans and difficulties with RMA SMR is famously bad, if you want to swap those disks out down the road I can recommend Ironwolf...

PVE disk distribution (partitioning) and RAIDZ1 space confusion

Just a few pointers (but I'm not an expert), since you did not get any answers yet: WD Red drives sometimes use SMR (unless they are WD Red Pro), which is not suitable for ZFS RAIDz1 is only similar to (hardware) RAID5 in the sense that it can cope with losing one drive. ZFS is slower as it has...

    SSD slow read and write

...recommending QVO? No, man. Just no. If you're going to have to re-do it, at least do it right. Proxmox docs recommend Enterprise SSD - for homelab you can get away with less as long as you're aware of the tradeoffs (and probably bottlenecked I/O) but I would avoid QVO drives just as much as...

vzdump backup in 8.2.2 takes almost 3 times longer

Did you know, your WD Drives WDC WD40EFAX. that are smr drives - https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/50697/~/steps-to-determine-if-an-internal-drive-uses-cmr-or-smr-technology That is real bad, special when you run ZFS on it.

Setup help (easy on SSD health)

...NVMe) because of the many random-read IOPS for the VMs. But your usage is probably quite low. Use a old fashioned rotating HDD (but not SMR) but you'll probably be fine with your NVMe drives. It's not uncommon to corrupt the filesystem(s) on a consumer SSD when power fails but not always...

    High IO Delay, Slow performance

Could you check if your HDDs are SMR or CMR? It is known that SMR disks perform badly with scrubs. Regarding using a raid setup with a hardware controller, this is not recommended. See ZFS's documentation [2]. Regarding the Backup server, we recommend using SSDs [1] for performance. The reason...

    Slow write on a VM

maybe 190 is a little bit high, what is the result with 32 or 64 queues ? you should really look if you don't have a SMR disk for example: https://www.paradigit.be/western-digital-blue-smr-2-tb/20975485/product because you really don't want to use this for vms. (they are only good for cold...

    Slow write on a VM

iperf came out OK. However I am not familiar with "fio". I will get a hold on to it. But do tell me when baseline or numbers am I looking for to constitute normality?

    Slow write on a VM

Use "fio" for benchmarking the storage and "iperf" for benchmarking the network. Keep in mind that SMR HDDs and QLC SSDs are terrible at writing and a big performance drop is totally expected.

Can you mix Seagate Exos X24 and Seagate IronWolf Pro drives in the same ZFS pool?

Ironwolf Pro is definitely not SMR. Even regular Ironwolf is CMR. Theoretically, you could mix the drive types in the same pool but I would keep the drives the same per-vdev. e.g. 4x18TB Ironwolf, vdev 1 and 2, mirrors - or I would go up to 6x and RAIDZ2 them 4x18TB EXOS vdevs 3 and 4...

Can you mix Seagate Exos X24 and Seagate IronWolf Pro drives in the same ZFS pool?

...a higher read/write per year, 550TB vs. 300TB. The MTBF is also higher (2,5 million hours vs. 1,2). Different recording heads (Exos TMDR, IW Pro SMR), different cache (Exos write-through, IW Pro write-back). In short: the Exos is the more „real“ enterprise drive. You can mix them in ZFS, but...
