Ok well,

I tested the new version

No, I'm against that. If the limit forces people to actually read their AI-generated posts and make them somewhat concise, or clean up their code slop before posting it here, we should definitely leave it as it is. You and your script are living proof that this limitation is a good thing. ;-p

By the way, isn't that why you want the higher limit in the first place? It's not because it makes things more difficult for users who want to use your script. In fact, I can simply click on the file and select "Open with text editor" in my browser, which is easier than copying the entire script from a code block in a forum post.

It's about making it easier for you to post it here, isn't it? ;-)

Yes, and honestly, even if someone just wants to share it directly here, I'd say the "workaround" of attaching it as a file is perfectly acceptable. And for regular forum posts that are expected to be read by humans, I'd say the current limit is more than sufficient. ;-)

Let's be clear, if YOU don't make things easy for me, I will not bother sharing my solutions

I don't want the forum cluttered with posts sized up to 128 KB.
What do you want, 1x 16kb one liner or 8 of them ?

I'm not asking people to go elsewhere and I also am not going else, what is it with you people just trying to get people to leave ?

It is 4 times more operations plus now you have to handles files. A code block is select->copy, I'm trying to make things e-a-s-i-e-r

What is the deal with absolute avalanche of unanimous grumps complaining about making things easier ?

I mean, I can tell from the PVE web interface that you must all be some kind of coordinated AI swarm absolutely determined to make everything as cumbersome and difficult to use and deter newcomers and slow things down as much as possible and get people to leave the website and just turn off the computer and go outside and touch grass ? Is that the point here ?

That's true, but the forum isn't for hosting scripts. That's what github/gitlab/codeberg are for. Or if you don't like that, file attachments work fine. "Making it easy" by posting gobbledygook is not helpful in the long run.

Let's be clear, if YOU don't make things easy for me, I will not bother sharing my solutions
That might be for the best if this is what you've got.

Maybe none of them? I'm beginning to think that you don't actually understand this and are just going by what your AI says.

There's more to software than writing code. As we learn more and more each day, even a thing with no brain can generate code.

A person who really wanted to help would take feedback into consideration and maybe re-do the script to be more readable, perhaps write some explanation of what it does, etc. For all their flaws that's what the community scripts are about. Others can read the scripts, learn from them, and help improve them. That's the "community" part.

BTW, the only reason this thing is so nasty is that you want to embed scripts into systemd unit files that are themselves generated by a script. And the only reason for _that_ is so it can be cut-and-pasted into a terminal, which is not behavior we should be encouraging, especially when it is as obfuscated as this is. You've boxed yourself into a bad solution because you chose bad goals up-front.

A real solution would separate the script from the unit file and make the script readable by an educated human. It would have a comment header that explains what it is trying to do. That way when you come back to this two years later you would stand some chance of understanding what is going on.

I mean, I literally incoporated every single suggestion that I could fit in the 16384 character limit
You know, the topic of discussion of this thread ?

I could easily give you extremely well articulated clean script that follow my real programming style guide.
But there's a 16384 character limit and my patience has limits about chopping it up into 8 pieces and waiting down the posting cooldown delay.

Oneliner minified can still be read, you just need to deminify them, we have the tools, they're not going away, this attitude needs to move on.

If you really want the full enchilada give me my DAMN 128KB and I'll give you the pretty script.

BTW, the only reason this thing is so nasty is that you want to embed scripts into systemd unit files
Yes, that's my solution, that's how I decided it should be, and I could also make the service unit file all pretty so you can pretend to read them too, but that will take more than 16kb

And the only reason for _that_ is so it can be cut-and-pasted into a terminal, which is not behavior we should be encouraging,
Look, there's a solution, why 16 click, file download, file transfert two apps

When you can copy then paste and be done ?
My friends and I we call that "watering the papercut forest".

The "papercut forest" is the place of never ending attrition that using computers always is, dealing with infinite user interface insult and pointless busywork to make broken thing sort-of-kind-of work.

Do you know how long it took me to fix this bug, it would have been easier and cheaper to throw the entire into garbage and buying a new one than the resources I wasted developping this solution.

And now you're asking me to jump through EULAs and TOSs for the privilege of letting the few other people with the same problem how to not waste 3 weekends trying to resolve this ?

A real solution would separate the script from the unit file ....
The real solution is that the OS should have had the CPU bugfix in already.

I decided I want these toggles as service units so I could re-install them with a single paste.

When you make your own fixes, you can implement them however you like, this is the method I chose and now if you would please please please get out of my way and just let me paste it in some 3 year old thread without anymore hoop jumping so that I can move on with my life cutting down the next tree in the forest of papercuts that is eating every one of my damn weekends ?

Nobody cares. You come here to bitch that the software you got for free isn't good enough but you'll deign to fix it if we just allow gigantic unreadable AI slop in the forum. Boo-hoo, you insufferable jerk.

Promise? Deal! Which is also what I say to colleagues that threaten the team with similar things.
Get out of my thread, stop derailing

My patience with the boomer-swarm has now run out, I have answered all your pointless antagonistic derailing malicious questions but you are stuck in 1995, you just need to get out of my way already and maybe consider touching some grass instead of spending your afternoon arguing why other people should be restricted from posting.

You can't make miracles, 16384 is not enough for many scripts.
True. But since the forum isn't primarily about hosting scripts, and there's a perfectly viable workaround in the form of uploading a file, I don't see an issue with that.

And for regular posts, having a limit is definitely a good thing, especially in the age of AI. Nobody has the time to read entire AI-generated essays just to help someone troubleshoot a problem. And that's what this forum is primarily about: support. People should at least make an effort to explain their problems concisely. Especially you, who apparently can't even be bothered to copy your code into a file and upload it here, which takes all of 30 seconds, should understand that, shouldn't you? ;)

Proxmox was never primarily aimed at newcomers or hobbyists. It just so happens that many of them use it because it's free, has popular community scripts, and many YouTubers have helped make it popular in the home lab scene. However, in many cases. especially for those who just want to quickly and easily host a few services at home, Proxmox was never the best solution, and probably never will be.

Does that mean home users shouldn't use it? Of course not. However, if you're expecting a "one-click" solution for everything, you're likely to have a hard time. On the other hand, if you have more advanced use cases, are willing to accept that they come with a certain degree of complexity, and are prepared to put in a little time and effort, Proxmox can be a great fit for a homelab. You might even learn a thing or two along the way.

Admin the setting for post max length is
Then I guess the limit was set deliberately. And once again, I think the limit is perfectly adequate for most posts and even smaller tutorials. It would have been sufficient for your script, too, as others have already demonstrated. The only reason it wasn't is that you apparently wanted to dump the very first thing the AI spat out straight into the forum without making any effort to clean it up.

Also Xenforo sucks, should really switch to anything else that's open source and save some bucks!
Nothing but whining. Makes me wonder why you're even here if you think everything here sucks and is so cumbersome.

But yeah, sure. I wouldn't mind if they switched to more modern forum software. However, it's not something I particularly care about, and I would definitely be in favor of having a character limit there too. ;)

Yes, we are all part of a big conspiration to gatekeep this forum from ai-generated messages and newbies.

Please do!

I am more of a "get things done" kind of person, I have things to do and I'm really mad that they keep not working

We know this already from this other thread of yours:

I understand that keeping thing difficult increases job security for operators and prevents their users from doing useful things without having to ask their admin for stuff.
> you didn't address my argument: If a feature is considered as potential security issue and thus not implemented why should it be possible to implement it as a mod?

If there was a mod that would turn off all or any security system in proxmox, I would install this mod right now.
I simply do not need most of proxmox's security layers, they get in the way of my work flow, yes I would remove them all.

Since then I didn't bother to interact with you since in the end you are not interested in doing things the right way anyhow but "gettings things done". You also argued that you don't care about security, thus I don't bother to use anything you coded (by yourself or with AI) since I can't trust it to be secure.

So if some character limit means that you won't share your ai-slop with it's potential security and other issues, then this is a good thing in my book, nothing of value was lost.

What I don't get is why people even bother to even discuss things with you? You showed multiple times that you are not interested in help from people with more knowledge and experience and consider them beneath you since you "want to get things done". I won't stand in your way then and highly recommend this to anybody else: Don't hinder Shodan "gettings things" done, he isn't interested in your opinion anyhow.

For me this thread shows why gatekeeping is actually a good thing in some cases.

I agree with your your points but for me this also is reason why I think that the community scripts and the youtubers clickbait are actually doing more harm than good, greybearded gatekeeper I am.

This thread has run its course, so I’m locking it. For future postings: Please follow the rules you agreed on when signing up here, and stay civil and keep discussions on topic. This is the Proxmox Community Forum, not a source code forge - yes the limit is deliberate and won't change - or a stage for online feuds.
