Upgrade from Proxmox VE 8.4.x to 9.1. Veeam Related

Hi,
I'm planning to upgrade pve from 8.4.x to 9.1. The reason is because version 9.2 is still not supported by Veeam. If I proceed with this upgrade I may not be able to perform agentless backup. Correct me if I'm wrong. Is there any way to pin the version to 9.1?

Hi @hishamrixs, welcome to the forum.

While I understand, and often share, the sentiment expressed by other posters that different backup products might be better suited to your particular use case, we also have to recognize the business and operational requirements that are often outside a system administrator's control:
  • Existing infrastructure
  • Existing investment
  • Application dependencies
  • Business continuity requirements that extend beyond the hypervisor
  • Data retention and preservation requirements
  • Etc.
To answer your question, I believe you have two options:
  • Download and install the 9.1 ISO, either for a fresh installation or as the basis for an upgrade.
  • Use the Proxmox Offline Repository.
I have not personally needed to use either approach, so I cannot comment on their viability.

Keep in mind that PVE follows a rolling upgrade model. Once you are on a given major release, in-family upgrades (for example, 9.x → 9.y) are designed to move the system forward. There is no official way to stick to 9.x short of not upgrading the system at all.


PS your 3rd option is to stay on 8.x until Veeam releases support for a currently shipping 9.x version. Note that 9.3 is likely not far off in release...

I am backing up Proxmox 9.2 hosts with Windows and Linux VM's with Veeam 13.0 with no problem. Veeam 13.1 is due out any day and will introduce Replication. So looking forward to that.
