We are considering changing frm a Veritas BE and VMware environment to a Proxmox environment.

I'm finding some discussion on SQL backups, but nothing authoritative.

1. Can Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) back up SQL 2019 and 2020 "natively"? (Will do full backups and transactional differential/incremental backups and update the SQL backup catalog) on Windows SQL servers?

2. Will it do the same on Rocky Linux SQL Server 2019 & 2022?

3. Can granular restores of specific DBs be done?

4. Can restores to a point in time be done?

Thank you so much for any answers.

Ok bummer. We can do native backups to disk, and then back those up with PBS, but we're talking about terabytes of extra disk usage if we do that.

If we do SQL backups to disk, that part will take extra terabytes on my SAN. This is before PBS does it's disk backups of those .bak and .inc files. Currently we skip that, and use BE to back directly up to the backup server then dupe to tape.

Some folks reported here that they use PBS for vm and lxcs and Veeam agent for their SQL Server backups. I have no Personal experience with it though

just to clarify, MDF files as SQL backups by PVE/PBS are valid, because rely on SQL VSS agent within Windows guest.
Only granular restore is missing. Full MDF need to be downloaded/restored, attached as temporary to recovery specific DB.
