Nuke the host, save the VMs

I have a PVE 8.4 installation that I want to delete and clean install 9.0. Not that I am afraid to do an upgrade (well, maybe a little) but moreso because I installed 8.4 as a test and did a lot of things that you're not supposed to do with it, like installing packages and other mucking around at the host level. So I'd like to nuke the host and clean install PVE 9.0. The only problem is I created several VMs that I'd like to keep. Can I copy or back them up to a different drive before I delete the host, and then restore them later? If you haven't guessed yet I am a PVE beginner.

When I try to install PBS from a USB stick, it wants to overwrite an entire disk (all partitions). Is there any way around that? It seems like overkill. Or do you suggest a different software to backup the VMs?

Hi,
There are two main methods:
  1. Backup through Proxmox Backup Server
  2. Perform a local backup, then transfer the backup file located in /var/lib/vz/dump to a remote location
Both methods allow full restoration after reinstalling Proxmox 9!
For option 2, if you move the backup file to the same path, you can restore it through the PVE 9 GUI.
If you need any additional information, please reply.
