Dvd/bluray as backup media?

Hi,

I was going to buy a tape drive for my new pbs.

But now I am wondering whether it would be possible/practical to use a dvd or bluray writer instead?

I am aware that tapes can be used again and (normal) dvd/bluray media can‘t. But with the price of an empty dvd, that‘s a lot of dvds I can buy for the price of a tape drive and a few tapes.

So, is it possible and what would be the downsides?

Thanks!

Also keep in mind that DVDs/Bluerays are bad for longterm backups, especially discs you burned yourself. I moved all my CD/DVD backups years ago back from disc to HDDs because many of the discs were corrupted meanwhile.

I came here looking for this. I have an LTO4 tape drive and it's works great with proxmox. Thank you. I also have a dvd burner in my proxmox backup server and was wondering if your thoughts had changed in the 4 years since you posted this? Mind you that I would want S3 backups (like tape) as a priority. With S3 I could make a fozen set remote backup offsite fairly easily. I think a DVD burning option to let's say mail a backup somewhere would be the use case (physical snail mail). Not a massive use case but wanted to ask the question none-the-less. Thank you for an amazing piece of software. I've been a loyal proxmox user for a few year in my homelab. ;-)

Sorry, we still have no plans to support DVD burners.

no worries and thank you again for the great software. If I needed to, I could always take the root.pxar file and burn that to a dvd.
