I installed Proxmox on a computer a 500GB HD and everything seemed to complete fine. However, I am unable to boot directly from the HD without having the CD in the drive and even then I have to go into the BIOS boot manager and select the HD. Is this by design? Do did something go wacky with my install? Did attempt a few different times to no prevail using both ACHI and IDE settings for the drive controller.

Check, whenever you have UEFI as default activated in your BIOS, if so, try to set it by default to CMS or Legacy (there is different naming for different vendors)
