Try to change your VM to use virtio-drivers. Adapt this howto to your needs with Etch: http://chari.titanium.ee/kvm-change-disk-to-virtio-proxmox/ But I'm not sure if there are virtio-drivers for Etch, check this first. And don't forget to check the boot-device in /boot/grub/menu.lst
