Resolved, I found a nice guide for Debian guests on freenas / Bhyve and common issues.

1. Download the Debian Minimal NetInst IOS - I used debian-12.4.0-amd64-netinst.iso
2. Adjust VM VNC device...
The error message seems to be because a function was renamed in grub in December 2020.

So something must be out of date.... or the wrong library is being used.
Another Note, I purchased a community subscription for Proxmox Backup Server and enabled it at the same time I upgraded. I upgraded to the latest 2.4.4 first.

I'm seeing this issue also, installed fresh a few weeks ago.
When I launch a Debian 10 container - created this morning - I just get the blinking cursor.
When I reboot with the console up, I see no startup messages.
After a certain number of minutes, when I go back and try it again, it works...
PatchDog - just to answer your question, S.Volkov did the following.
Edit the /etc/debian_version file on your image, and change 'squeeze/sid' to a numeric debian version, such as 5.0.3 which was for the lenny release.
