It literally in the error message: ... and the VM has been restarted. Rebooting the Proxmox host after upgrading is also a good idea. Best of luck with your backups and upgrades. -

As far as I know, backups should just work. And backups should be backwards compatible. (Unless otherwise specificly stated in the upgrade docs.) I would however stongly recommend to not use PBS in your case and instead use vzdump. (And upload...

I don't find it easy to upgrade through multiple versions by carefully reading and following the guides written for that. In my opinion, backing up everything (to PBS) and restoring on a freshly installed PVE 8.3 is much easier.

See System Software Updates for the correct procedure. Never use apt upgrade, as that has the potential to break systems.

No use apt-get dist-upgrade instead of upgrade: https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs-6/pve-admin-guide.html#_system_software_updates (and also configure a repository first).

Yes, just follow the normal system upgrade procedure. That's also a possibility, if you rather reinstall than just upgrade 6 -> 7 -> 8.

it should work fine, we try very hard to stay backwards compatible there :) the other way round (newer client when doing the backup, older client when attempting to restore) might not work, depending on used features. testing your backups before...
