look I do really thing that this is a problem. I often don't need all hosts running in a cluster... in VMware you can choose to put a host in maintenance mode which is very convenient. Instead now I have this misleading and frankly incorrect error "login failed" I have to SSH into the powered on...

THANK YOU. i have a cluster of nodes and one of them had a complete hardware failure (never will come online again) and this was the only solution that worked. THANK YOU. mv /etc/pve/nodes/HPDL350/qemu-server/*.conf /etc/pve/nodes/m93p/qemu-server/

for anyone that has this issue in 2022 - i fixed it by going to a host that had no SSH issues and Copied the /root/.ssh/known_hosts from a working host to a host with issues. and it fixed the issue.

Thanks for your response. I guess what I'm saying is: 1. That the login failed error is incorrect and misleading. 2. I'm logging directly into the web UI of the powered on node not another offline node. 3. The cluster knows which nodes are available based on some sort of health heart beat...
