    Okay, downloading the 4.2-1 ISO did not resolve this. i do get the correct splash screen for 4.2-1 but there is still the same error about 401.

    Uhm, I just checked the downloads page (https://www.proxmox.com/de/downloads/proxmox-backup-server/iso) and it seems like 4.2-1 is available for download since today(?). I'll give that a shot at home!
