Doubt its going to work out. The card cannot keep up with what you are trying to do. Have you tried raid 1+0?

I wound up buckling and getting a 710. Made a huge difference. I tried just about everything under the sun and really felt hurned by dell on that purchase since they say they support Ubuntu on the server/card.

I had the perc 310 controller and my performance with RAID 5 sucked ass too. Get rid of that piece of trash and upgrade to the expensive PERC if you want your headaches to go away. Its what I had to do.

For your vms that are database driven, 15k sas drives or perhaps a pair of ssds for the databases would be best, you could mount the fileserver data to a slower set of disks, maybe sata if you went with ssd. You could have vibration issues affecting drive life if you vary the spindle speed too...

Simply put, your arent going to be able to do what you are trying with $1,000 or 2,000 dollars. It sounds like you are trying to build an appliance to retail as opposed to SAAS. If you were going for SAAS, you should look more into redundancy and shared storage, but your appliance requirements...

Just to be clear, you are writing to the Windows Virtual machine from another machine?

I'm setting up a Linux box running alfresco, I anticipate 10 terabytes or so woth of data to be added in the next moth or so. I'm looking for opinions on setting up the main storage. Directly mount an nfs share from my NAS or setup vmdk's in an LVM? Pros and cons appreciated.

What is your network situation look like? Are the vmdk's stored on an nfs share? And more importantly, how much ram is in your freenas box? I find that if I want to get the max i/o from freenas I need lots of ram. Currently 32gigs is the absolute minimum I'd use when striping across mirrors...
