Ubuntu installation doesn't work

Hello,

I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 to a VM, but booting from it doesn't work. The installation works well and without errors.

Once I started the VM, I get the following error from GRUB.

error: invalid arch-independent ELF magic.

I am using latest version of Proxmox, Debian and I have Kernel version 3.10.

Any ideas?

I redownloaded Ubuntu 12.04.5 and 14.04.1 for the third time.

I just tried the installation with Ubuntu 12.04.5 and 14.04.1 again without success.

never happened to me.

but googling that errors pops out a lot of ubuntu forums relevant posts (sometime reported as solved)

try to see if some happen to your case too...

Please provide details about your hardware and VM settings. Ubuntu is widely used on KVM, so there must be something very different on your side.

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop and Server in Proxmox VMs previously. The only issue I experienced is a significant graphical distortion when I attempt to connect to desktop sharing via RealVNC (haven't tried other VNC apps yet). Do not have that issue on my ESXi 5.1 box.

Otherwise things went well. I'll do it again later today and record my specifics.

Ok, I did a quick install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 server. Here are the particulars....

Proxmox = 3.2-4/e24a91c1
OS = Linux 3.x/2.6 Kernel
CD/DVD = 14.04.1 server
Hard Disk: IDE, 16GB, QEMU image format (qcow2), No cache
CPU = 1 socket, 2 core. Type = Default (kvm64)
Memory = fixed size 2048
Network = bridged mode (vmbr0)

Installed with OpenSSH only.

Ok, I did a quick install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 server. Here are the particulars....

Which kernel version do you have on the host system?

I have kernel version 3.10 because I want to encrypt my hard disk and with version 2.6.32 the dropbear server didn't work for me. So I did a manual installation because I want to use a clean system and not an edited system from my server provider.

Edit: I will test a new ubuntu installation with your vm config.

Okay, now it works fine! I choosed IDE bus for the hdd instead of SATA bus.

But by the way.... Whats the difference? And which advantages / disadvantages do the other bus types for virtualisation have?

Glad it's working for you! Unfortunately I do not know much on the difference between IDE/SATA/SCSI/VirtIO. What I know is IDE limits you to 3-4 drives, VirtIO has to do with paravirtualization. I am just getting started with Proxmox and have only created VMs with IDE. Perhaps one of the Proxmox reps can respond.
