Hello,

could somebody tell me why the tape method described here http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Tape_Drives with iSCSI target is not working with the 2.6.35 kernel. Is there any workaround this.

After upgrading to 2.6.35 the iSCSI target could not be started any more.

I never tested it with 2.6.35. I most projects we recommend a backup tool supporting remote media agents (e.g. latest Backupexec with the Linux agent installed on Proxmox VE if you run Windows boxes). faster.

thanks tom. I thought about that, too. but with kernel 2.6.32 everything works fine. I´m still waiting for SCSI-Passthrough like VMware did for my KVM Windows machines.

Hi,
this is the reason why i use a OpenVZ-VM (2.6.18) for bacula (backup) - makes sense due to much less virtualisation-loss and work good with a sas-connected jukebox.

I tested it now with windwos 2008 r2 x64 and backupexec 2010 r2 and the linux media server agent. But with virtio net on the 2k8 r2 guest I get only about 700MB/min to tape. On native 2k8 install I get about 3500MB/min to tape. Is there perhaps an issue with the 2k8 virtio drivers? On W2K3 I got about 1300MB/min to tape. I´m confused I though vhost-net would boost the guest to host performance. I do not want to install native w2k8 because I need this host for 2 more machines. Are there any tweaks to this constellation?

I am using pretty the same on a site. Here is my setup and the backup results.

Proxmox VE host (2.6.32, latest)
Intel SH3200, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 3050 @ 2.13GHz
Adaptec Raid 5808Z, 4 x 1 GB WD RE2 in Raid10

On this host, I got a HP LTO3 on a dedicated Adaptec SCSI adapter.

I installed Backup Exec 2010r2 (now also sp1) on the windows guest and the Linux agent on the host.

Backup files from the (local) Proxmox VE host:

Backed up 1466 files in 166 directories.
Processed 202519786615 bytes in  58 minutes and  56 seconds.
Throughput rate: 3277 MB/min
Compression Type: Hardware

Backup files from another Proxmox VE host (another node):

Backed up 78918 files in 44809 directories.
Processed 128340564844 bytes in  49 minutes and  47 seconds.
Throughput rate: 2459 MB/min
Compression Type: Hardware

Exchange DB on a remote Proxmox VE (also running as KVM):

Backed up 1 Exchange Server stores
Processed 18.302.021.910 bytes in  11 minutes and  49 seconds.
Throughput rate: 1477 MB/min
Compression Type: Hardware
