starwind VTL and tar blocking-factor

I spend some time trying to get starwind vtl to work with proxmox backup server.
Since Starwind needs some special settings regarding tar, how can I teach proxmox to use them?



tar -czf --blocking-factor=256 /dev/tape/by-id/scsi-8846A1C671-sg /root

-> works


proxmox-tape status --drive drive0
Error: mode sense failed - Illegal Request, Additional sense: Invalid command operation code

Please note that Proxmox Backup server does not use tar at all.

Second, what kind of drive do they emulate (should be LTO5 or later)?

not really, but it in the first message it fails when doing a long form 'MODE SENSE(10)' operation (which is specified since LTO5 at least)

Sorry to resurrect this 1yr. old thread. Can someone verify that Backups are working with the Starwind VTL product? There wasn't any follow to confirm that here.

Thank you for your interest in StarWind VTL. The issue was resolved a while ago and fixes are included in the last VTL build, which could be downloaded from our website. https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-tape-library

We are running internal VTL tests with Proxmox periodically, so I can confirm that it works.
