Sound into VM

I'd like to set up a live audio streamer on a Linux guest using Ices/Icecast or similar. To get this to work I need to provide an audio feed to the line-in/mic port on the sound card.

I think I've seen all of the posts relating to sounds and can't find a satisfactory solution to getting the card recognised by the VM.

Does the host have to have the sound modules/libraries loaded? If so, which ones?

I've spent hours reading and experimenting, so any suggestions are welcome.

TIA
