Hello,
I have a question regarding purchasing a PC
for Proxmox. It will initially run Win 10/11 as well as ioBroker and Home Assistant.
I'm looking for a PC that is expandable.
What can you recommend?
Sincerely
Michael

What exactly do you plan to do with the Windows VMs?

You should think in advance about the intended use and the possible requirements for the resources.
For a Linux VM or container I would plan on 2 - 4 GB of RAM, for a Windows VM I would plan on 4 - 8 GB of RAM.
If you have several unified systems running, KSM can help you use less RAM. The same applies to LXC containers.

You shouldn't start with less than 16 GB of RAM. If you want to use ZFS, you should definitely plan on 32GB of RAM.

If you don't need many TB of storage space, I would recommend going for enterprise SSDs (e.g. the Samsung PM883 with 960 GB), they usually cost 10 - 20 EUR more than consumer ones, but they also last 5 - 8 times as long. It's more fun, especially with ZFS.
If you need larger hard drives, you should make sure that they are CMR hard drives. If you want to use this with ZFS, you should consider whether you might want to speed it up a bit with an NVMe.

The basic platform depends on what you want and how much budget you have. If you e.g. For example, if you value data integrity and therefore want ECC RAM, you will usually have to use workstation or server hardware instead of consumer boards.
If you want it cheap, you can use something like a Dell PowerEdge R620 / R630, but they also consume the most power and are quite loud (everything can be optimized a bit, but they are just intended for the data center). If you place more value on low power consumption, you should look at current hardware, but it is of course more expensive to purchase - but perhaps a previous model will do the trick.

Hello,
Thanks for your quick message.
I'm not exactly a PC specialist, but it's enough for home use. The system should run Linux/Ubuntu based. I would like to run Windows there as a virtual machine. I'm thinking of 16GB or larger ram, 1TB hard drive. The device should be energy efficient and quiet. I thought about Fujitsu Eprimo, but what kind?
Best regards
Michael

Hallo,
Michael
