A KVM instance running Win2003 R2 cannot shutdown or restart from inside the virtual machine.
Also neither the reset and shutdown buttons in the PVE web interface nor the "qm [reset|shutdown] [VMID]" command works so I guess it is at least partly a KVM problem.
The stop/start buttons and "qm [stop|start] [VMID]" commands works.
Maybe it's a ACPI problem? ACPI driver?
Should I ask M$ instead?
Any hints or ideas?

You need ACPI enabled in your guest - this is how the guest receives reboot/shutdown notifications.

Not wanting to hijack but we have something similar to this and ACPI is enabled. For us, when ms security updates are automatically applied to the w2k3r2 OS the system fails to restart itself properly and appears to hang.

It responds via PVE web interface and when restarted works fine thereafter. We have turned off the auto-updates for now but a proper resolution would be good, certainly useful to understand why.

Did the ACPI issue resolve your problems?
