We're not a customer yet but we might make the switch from SolusVM to Proxmox. We use Netbox to manage our prefixes and reservations and we have delegated the assignment of individual IP addresses to SolusVM.

IPAM in SolusVM isn't perfect but it fits our use case. It allows us to assign IP addresses and we can manage reverse DNS through its integration with PowerDNS. Both are powerful assets for us and we are looking for similar functionality in Proxmox.

I know it isn't available in Proxmox yet and I have briefly spoken to support about it. They suggested to open a thread here. This is a feature request that that can pull us in but I hope others share our ideas on this.

maybe you should describe a bit more what is solus VM doing for you, what is your current workflow ?

When using Proxmox LXC containers, you can configure on the host itself, via GUI, command line, or API calls the allocation of IP adresses to each container.

SolusVM is aware of the IP addresses it can hand out to servers. In its database are IPv4 addresses and IPv6 /64s. These IP's are placed in a group where you can specify the default gateway, subnet and nameservers. These groups are assigned to physical servers.

As soon as we provision a new VM it will tell which IP's are still available on that physical node. It will then configure the VM to use this IP in its network interface automatically -- much like cloud init can do for you too -- and the IP is set to assigned in the database. A customer is then able to manage its reverse DNS and in case of IPv6 it can assign additional individual /128's to a server if they want to.

SolusVM is only given the IP's it is allowed to distribute. Nothing more.
