I have a ubuntu VM w/ smb running. Reads are fast enough to saturate my network (100 MBps), but writes to the VM disk are much slower at 60 MBps. This is what the config looks like. I've tried creating smb shares on both the passthrough HD (scsi5) as well as the lvm disk, and write performance is the same on both. I've seen other people have this issue, but the solution isn't clear.
When I do a file copy via console, either copying with in a mounted disk or copying from the lvm to the passthrough drive, write speeds are super fast, over 300MBps. So I think the disk controller isn't the issue. Throwing SMB in there seems to mess with things.
