Transfer KVM Machines

I have a couple simple Proxmox 4.x servers with internal SATA drives for storage configured for raid1 on ZFS. I need to update to Proxmox 5.x as I understand. What is an easy low down time way to transfer these KVM machines to a temp Proxmox 5.x server so that I can update this server from Proxmox 4.x to 5.x? I will then need to move them back when complete.

My only thought is too stop them in middle of night, do backups and then transfer. One of the KVM machines is large and disk I/O hungry making this process very slow though.

Transfering the machines takes much more time than just powerdown all VMs and update the server itself. The update to PVE5 is simple and can be done in place:
