Hi there,

I’m new to Proxmox and I have some questions before I want to do the switch.

Currently I have a 10th gen NUC running Ubuntu 20.04 Server with a 4-disk Thunderbolt Direct Attached Storage (DAS) connected. I’m using MergerFS to combine the 4 disks and SnapRaid for parity

I’m running some Docker containers which r/w media files on the DAS, one of these containers is Plex which transcodes media while we watch.

So the questions I have are;
  1. Is it possible to expose the Thunderbolt DAS space to multiple VM’s without loosing too much performance?
  2. Can I continue to use MergerFS and SnapRaid or should I migrate to another disk setup?
  3. If I create a VM with Plex installed, how much transcoding performance will I loose?
  4. Or should I install Docker on the Proxmox host?
Thank you for helping me!

If the VM should use the GPU for hardware encoding you will need to PCI passthrough the GPU to the VM and the GPU isn't available anymore for the host itself or other VMs. If you only got the integrated GPU you wouldn't be able to VNC into the other VMs or to attach a Monitor to change stuff in the UEFI/BIOS and so on.
Running Docker on your host is an option if you are only hosting local services. Not sure if I would like to run online services that way if something goes wrong and an attacker gets access to the whole system.
Running Docker inside an unprivileged LXC is also an option and I saw a thread some days ago where someone was using the GPU inside a LXC but I don't know if the access to that GPU would ne exclusive only too.
