Snapshot my kvm´s and backup individual files from my guests (linux) ?

I like to snapshot all my vm´s and backup individual files from my guests (linux and windows) to a Tape Drive (LTO-4 or LTO-5), I am not sure if It is possible (and a good idea) to restore individual files from a kvm-snapshot,
how should I do it any suggestions ?
