site is down with exit 1 code

I have a site running on:

ksm-control-daemon: 1.0-4

It stopped overnight. I can not start it. Here is the error message:

I could really use some help on what caused this.

Please update your installation. Version 1.7 is simply too old.

Dietmar: good to hear from you. Just do a simple aptitude update? Will that fix problem and allow starting of kvm?

No - you missed several major updates.

bump: so if I do 'aptitude update && aptitude full-upgrade' will that screw up the system? Please let me know if that is how I should proceed, as I need to get this server backup.

you should plan carefully to prevent breaking your system - a good start point is to read:

Tom: hi - its been awhile since we spoke. I don't want to upgrade to 2.0 on that box yet. So, if I change sources.list to support going to 1.9 and then do a dist-upgrade, would that work?

BTW: do you have any hourly support contracts. I'm just a one man show with one server.
