Does anyone have any good guides on how to get Proxmox up and running with FreeNAS handling ZFS storage.
Having Dockers running and reading/writing data to the FreeNAS shares?

My server I have available to use:
Dual Xeon, 128gb, dual 10gbe
Storage I was thinking of going with:
2x 250gb SSD Boot Mirror
1x 128gb SSD ISOs
1x 128gb SSD FreeNAS Install
2x 1tb SSD Docker containers and downloads
18x 8tb HDD's Storage (2x RaidZ2 Pools, 9 Drives each, 7 Usable)

Dockers will be: Radarr, Sonarr, NZBget, Emby/Jellyfin/Plex

Does anyone have any good guides? In my testing I found you could use local for ISO's and FreeNAS OS, is this a possibility?

Yes, we migrated many freenas servers to proxmox. This is very easy. Plugin in old HDD's in Proxmox, import the Zpool. Read. Or transfer the pools and datasets easily over lan to new location. Docker with proxmox also easy. Build a new KVM with your favorite OS, install Docker, and also ready.

Thats great and what im after, but more are there any step by step walkthroughs/guides?
Im new to proxmox

Ok, first question how you transfer the old data? Do you transfer it to the new hardware, or do you use parts from the old hardware?

So I'm going to move all my data onto 1 pool. Use 7 Drives of data. Create new FreeNAS with a new pool of 9 drives, 7 usable.
Move all my data to that new pool, then move the drives into FreeNAS and expand the pool with a new vdev.
Is that a logical idea?

I have an older small server where I will put some of the larger drives into and copy data to that, then move it to FreeNAS with my current hardware

First you have to make a decision for yourself whether freenas or proxmox. It makes no sense because you agree with me to complicate matters. Freenas is designed to run on physical machine. Proxmox can manage your zfs directly. So you have only two commands no manage your zfspool.
Code:
zpool
zfs
With both you can do all what you would like.

How would I handle that?
Install Proxmox on that Server on two extra SSD's. After that System and storage is nice separeted. So you can go on to create/import your zpools. Share with Samba/NFS, create VM's on that....

Or do I understand you miss? Or would you like to bind an Proxmoxserver(s) to your FreeNAS?

Ok so I get that Proxmox has ZFS and can manage it, but ultimately this will be for a home NAS with my media.
So I was thinking FreeNAS ontop and pass the disks through to it so that way it can do the SMB sharing and so on.

How would you use the above server with Proxmox to share media around the house running dockers and so on?
I could create a large ZFS pool in Proxmox and pass it through to OpenMediaVault or something instead?

In my case i do not use docker at home. Docker we are using at use cluster in the office. But yes docker is very fine for tings like you would.

@home i have some zpools. Then have some VM's and some LXC's. For example, i running emby mediaserver on an lxc. VM's and CT's are installed on an zpool. So you are feel free to add virtual harddisk from different zpools to VM's or CT's. In my case I find that more flexible. For a year i had shared my data directly from ZFS with NFS and SMB. But now i have all my datas in VM's (Univention Server). It's much easier and more fun.

If you would like to share directly from Proxmox and you wouldn't use the cmd, you can use Webmin instead.

If you would like an easy stable system, then use Freenas, or OpenMedaVault, or Proxmox. Not Freenas or OMV on top of Proxmox. Even if others are supposed to say that they do it and that it works. I like stable, simple systems, and that is why I would advise against them.

You can find out for yourself what is right now. Test and then decide. ;)

Umm now im even more confused :D
I had it set in my mind to use FreeNAS ontop of Proxmox so that I can use it to do shares and be a NAS.
But I'm happy to not use it, just need another solution for sharing my data. I dont really REALLY need any SMB shares as the dockers and so on can take care of everything and I can share via Plex/Emby and/or Nextcloud.

Just not 100% sure on the best way forward.
