Hi all!,

I received my computer today and installed proxmox for virtualisation. My setup:
AMD 1090T
8GB DDR3 ECC
Asus M4A88T-M
2 x 1TB Harddisks (not in raid)

I did not configure raid and my hard drives are configured as IDE in my BIOS (AHCI or IDE possibility)

I am getting like 25 to 30% of IO delays while running 3 fresh installed VM's
3 x windows 7 - Full KMZ - 1024 MB RAM - 1 CORE each - 60GB IDE each

How can i decrease the IO delays?

Thanks in advance!

post the output of:
  • pveversion -v
  • pveperf (but stop your VM´s first to make sure that you do not have any load on the server)

Thanks for responding so quickly!

I am unable to acces the server at this very moment, i will try to issue the command tomorrow and post the output in this topic. Please watch again in 24 hrs.

probably your windows boxes are installing windows updates, so the load is expected. also think of using virtio instead of IDE.

Thanks for your reply!

I was installing 2 windows 7's and running one (idle) at that moment, however these actions should not give me IO delays at any time i guess? correct me if i am mistaken.

What do i gain with using virtio, is virtio supported with windows and why should i use it?

Hi!

Sorry for my late response, i reinstalled proxmox on just one hdd, and i am getting 35% delays while running 5 virtualized windows 7 systems. They are all installed with VIRTIO.

your storage is too slow, but to say anything you need to run this when your host is idle and not running any VM´s.

btw, upgrade to the latest stable, 1.9.

Thanks for your quick reply, I am new in this scene and to make it even worse... i dont know how to upgrade to the newest kernel... can you guide me ?

EDIT: nvm i found it.

However, can my hdd be the only reason for these delays?

Hello,

what is the reason for using IDE instead AHCI
I think it's like driving with hand brake, or not?
I also have 2x SATA HDD's without Raid (2x 2TB Seagate Constellation) WITH AHCI
and a single CPU Intel Board with a quad-core Xeon 2,6 GHz 16 GB-RAM

proxmox:~# pveperf

Thank you for your reply,

I will try to change my hdd mode from IDE to AHCI and see if it decreases the delays. I will post the results tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

Sorry for the huge delay, my last post was two weeks ago.

I changed the sata configuration from IDE to AHCI but i am still getting those huge IO delays they have increased from 35 to 50+% while changing the harddisk mode. I have no raid configuration!
How can this be? how can i decrease the delays? i have a new hitachi harddisk which is running at 7200RPM is my hard disk the slowing factor?

so the delays are around 35% running in IDE mode and currently using 2 (virtio based) windows 7 machines and the delays are around 50% when in AHCI mode.

PVEPERF @ AHCI:
CPU BOGOMIPS: 38573.11
REGEX/SECOND: 1164108
HD SIZE: 94.49 GB (/dev/mapper/pve-root)
BUFFERED READS: 85.95 MB/sec
AVERAGE SEEK TIME: 12.87 ms
FSYNCS/SECOND: 646.22
DNS EXT: 94.08 ms
DNS INT: 30.60 ms (local)

What to do know?
