Proxmox host configuration backup

We are using Proxmox Host version 6.X with ZFS.

we have moved from Esxi to proxmox so learning curve and need help as this will be for production use.

For VM backups we will use inbuilt proxmox backup system through GUI.
For proxmox host configuration we would like a backup solution.

There are 3 ways to backup the proxmox host we can find googling. Is there a fully documented backup and restore process one has or pointers for proxmox host configuration backup.
we would like to have a easy process if possible. Since we are doing VM backups from GUI so replication might be not a good option (storage wasted as already VM backup) but again if other options are not good than we can look into this.

1) ZFS to ZFS replication
https://github.com/psy0rz/zfs_autobackup#backuping-up-a-proxmox-cluster-with-ha-replication
https://github.com/jimsalterjrs/sanoid (syncoid)

2) rsnapshot

3) Backing up crucial files
https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/best-practice-for-proxmox-self-backup.38382/

Appreciate your help on this.

There is a chapter about backups in the reference documentation of Proxmox VE. However, it is not a fully documented process. The files indicated in the script you found are good for many backup scenarios.

If you use Proxmox VE for your production servers, I recommend you take a look at our subscriptions. The STANDARD plan, for example, gives you guaranteed response times and access to the Proxmox VE Enterprise Repository. This is the default, stable, and recommended repository for your production servers.

Hello @tariqhussain.sa ,
Can you share what solution did you go at the end ?
There is also a 4th solution: create a cluster, give 2 votes to the "backup" cluster ans start it up/down one a day to sync. https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/best-setup-for-main-server-backup-server-which-is-not-24-7.41315/

Just wanted to chime in to say that backup options of the Proxmox host configs are still severely lacking. Even something within the GUI that would spit out all the configs to a text file (like what you see in a router) would be better than nothing. I had a host SSD fail and it has been hell trying to work out what was running and configured on the host, as I only made limited documentation for myself.

Hi,

I fully agree with you that a config backup should be available is the gui for the proxmox config files (like the schedulable backup for the VM)

I found months ago the Danilo backup: https://github.com/DerDanilo/proxmox-stuff

It works pretty well until now.

I did not had to restore a machine with them, but it seems that all config files are included.
