We are very excited to announce the first stable release of our new Proxmox Backup Server!

Proxmox Backup Server is an enterprise backup solution, for backing up and restoring virtual machines, containers, and physical hosts. With key features like incremental backups, deduplication, Zstandard compression, and authenticated encryption (AE), Proxmox Backup Server ensures that protecting your most valuable data is quick and effortless. With strong encryption and methods of ensuring data integrity, backing up data is safe, even to targets which are not fully trusted. Moreover, the available range of access control options means that you can offer a lot of flexibility for users, while retaining tight control of the system. Proxmox Backup Server is easy to manage, offering both command line and web-based user interfaces, and is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (GNU AGPL, v3).

A big THANK YOU to our community! We are really grateful for all the support and feedback, all of you who were testing, bug reporting and patch submitting - thank you so much, you are fantastic!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can I upgrade my beta installation?
A: Yes, just upgrade to latest packages with apt or GUI and the beta repo will be removed automatically. Make sure you got a subscription to get upcoming stable updates (or configure pbs-no-subscription if you do not want to subscribe).

Q: How does this integrate into Proxmox VE?
A: Just add a Proxmox Backup Server datastore as a new storage target in your Proxmox VE. Make sure that you have at least pve-manager 6.2-9 installed, the upcoming Proxmox VE 6.3 will get further improvements.

Q: What will happen with the existing Proxmox VE backup tool (vzdump)?
A: You can still use vzdump. The new backup is an additional but very powerful way to backup and restore your VMs and containers.

Q: Can I already back up my other Debian servers (file backup agent)?
A: Yes, just install the Proxmox Backup Client, see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#install-proxmox-backup-client-on-debian

Q: Are there already backup agents for other distributions?
A: There are none packaged yet, work in progress.

Q: Is there any recommended server hardware for the Proxmox Backup Server?
A: We recommend using enterprise-grade server hardware components, with enough storage for your backup needs. The backup server should be in the same datacenter as your Proxmox VE hosts, see https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#recommended-server-system-requirements

Q: Where can I get more information about upcoming features?
A: Follow the announcement forum and pbs-devel mailing list https://lists.proxmox.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pbs-devel, and subscribe to our newsletter https://www.proxmox.com/news
