Network Traffic Monitor - What the best?

Hello,

http://www.cacti.net/ or http://cactiez.cactiusers.org/ for easy setup
Cacti has a very active community and it offers many possibilities for monitoring. I personally use Percona templates for all my servers and VM's http://www.percona.com/doc/percona-monitoring-plugins/1.1/
These are a little tricky to install but offer a good overview of system status.

Also have a look at Observium http://www.observium.org/ and Centreon http://www.centreon.com/

Hope it helps.

I read about Cacti that's good network traffic monitor. Can I install it in a CT to monitor HN and other CTs? How does it work? Do I need to install a template? As far as possible, I wouldn't touch proxmox installation.

Thank you

Thank you both. I'm just installed Observium in a CT. Look very nice and it seems works very well (installation at least) but... how can I add monitor agents? Someone can explain me? Do I need to add monitor agent in every CT and HN?

Hi, Is there something else ? I'd like to use my proxmox node to install some stuff for my home network monitoring. my lan has a fiber connectivity with a ISP provided router

To monitor? There is a zillion systems waiting for you to test them ;-)

Observium is now https://www.librenms.org/ and it works fine. I run it using SNMP for gathering data. (In my Homelab without auth, just plain version 2c with the "public" community.)

LibreNMS is much easier to setup than the following two: use Influxdb+Grafana for utilizing the integrated metric system (Datacenter-->Metric Server); I use Zabbix with a dedicated/additional agent on all systems to get a full blown and comprehensive monitoring system.

For the general audience - If you just need something terminal-based and simple, to realtime observe overall traffic load:

bwm-ng -t 2000 # updates every 2 seconds
netr - More detailed in/out statistics per-adapter

iptraf-ng - gets more involved with ports and IPs
ethstatus - a bit older, but updates frequently with an ASCII graph of network load per-adapter

You can use these in conjunction with GNU screen / tmux

I'd like monitoring my home LAN with following data:

Traffic sent by LAN ip
Traffic received by LAN ip
Address Server
Port Server
Ping to server (latency)
OS Lan client
Uptime

and so on

Some of those things you get from Netflow Analyzer, some of the from NMS. I work for NetVizura, but you can install pretty much any Netflow appliance and you will get those results.
There are two options for export, something like probe eq softflowd or different way if you use OvS.
Some guides i wrote about that:
https://www.netvizura.com/blog/netflow-analyzer/netflow-probe-a-real-world-example
https://www.netvizura.com/blog/netflow-analyzer/open-vswitch-netflow-configuration
And i repeat myself, you can use any brand, appliance whatever to display this data.

Do you think there is something with good visual interface for network and bandwidth monitoring ?

I like a lot what Ubiquiti offer on its Unifi platform
