Mail server requirements

Hi,

Just reading the Proxmox installation instructions. Looking to start with Debian and then install.

They say to install postfix as the mail server. I was just wondering whether Proxmox specifically required postfix, or will any mail server do? For systems like this I would typically just install nullmailer and have it forward all mail on to my 'main' mail server.

Thanks

Andy

Ah ok, it explicitly lists it as one of the packages to install in the instructions so I wondered if an alternative would be acceptable.

So does it specifically need postfix then? Any particular reason for this? I have no real working knowledge of postfix, so would prefer to use something I'm more familiar with if it's possible.

Thanks

Andy

So I was wondering about exactly the same, now 7 years on. Wonder if it gets bumped up and replied by someone who is using nullmailer instead of postfix in production perhaps?

So I appreciate that postfix can be used in a simple relay setup too, but postfix is an actual MTA, it feels very wrong to run a whole MTA on a hypervisor to me, sorry. A more smartass answer would be limiting the attack surface? Saving resources as well after all.

What's the benefit of running a fully fledged MTA on each node, someone could ask as well.

Basically this sums it all up, without the additional explanation of the OP, which does not apply to everyone necessarily.
