I am looking to setup a proxmox node with the following setup:

4x RAID 10 72gb SAS for proxmox installation on node (no VM's on this)
4x RAID 10 256GB SSD for VM's

8x 1TB SATA RAID 10 for backup

However I would like to place 6x RAID 10 SSD's, but I am wondering if a RAID 1 Mirror will suffice for the host OS. Is there little I/O on the Host's HDD array when a VM is on heavy load?

Hi,
raid-10 SAS for the OS is oversized!

I use on some hosts following config with good experiences:

2 big SATA-Disk with an raid-1 volume for OS (app. 100GB) and the remaining space as raid-1-volume for backup.
4-8 600GB SAS-Disks (15k) with raid-10 Volumes for local_pve (openvz) and DRBD-Devices (2 - one for each node).
SSDs (raid1/10) for DRBD-Storage (2 - one for each node) for VMs (DB-devices).

BTW: 72GB-SAS looks very old - perhaps you should use actual disks?

Udo, thank you for your reply. I will go RAID 1 for the Proxmox OS. The 72GB SAS are the only 'old' drives going in, and I have some spares, performance doesnt seem so bad. I guess ill try them out on a single node and get new drives for the others.
