KVM and Networking

Hey all,

I have a problem, and i can seem to find any answers on the forum.

I have a proxmox host setup and running with hetzner, and have 6 OpenVZ nodes running 100%
Recently i have installed a KVM with Windows 2003 64bit.

Everything is installed correctly, but i cannot get the Networking to work. i can ping the Main node, which i assume is the default gateway, but cannot ping open dns, via hostname or IP address.

Since the OpenVZ vm's work, I assume that networking is configured correctly.

Is there additional configuration required to use bridged networking with KVM ?

Shawn

Normally not, but this depends on the network infrastructure (maybe the hoster only allows one MAC address (to avoid MAC spoofing)?)

I thought of this, but then surely if my hosting provider only allows one mac address, then the OpenVZ VM's would have the same problem, but all my openVZ VMs are working 100%

OpenVZ usese venet by default (which is routed - no macs).

Oh, ok that makes sence thanks!

I will check the wiki to see the best workaround

Yes, hetzner binds all IP-Addresses to the MAC-Address of the Main-Interface.
What can I do that kvm runs with an own IP-Address?
I hope someone can help. :)

Ask Hetzner support?

OVH (one of your hosting partners) has implemented good solution for this problem.

So there is no way for using a virtual Network-card similar to the venet device on openvz?
What kind of a "good solution" has your Provider implemented for hat?
Can u add own MAC-Addresses or something?

If you want a worry free Proxmox VE hosting, choose a Proxmox VE hosting partner, http://www.proxmox.com/partners/hosting-providers/featured-partners - their hosting environment is working well with Proxmox VE and they also support the community.

If you choose others, I cannot tell you anything about it. e.g. Hetzner never contacted us so I have no idea about their network setup.

-.-
This answer didn't help.

Pls, can you just answer the questions, I thought this is a support forum instead of a commercial-gag?!?

I don't want to change my server provider to a MUCH more expensive and maybe not as much reliable one as well as u don't need to know the hetzner-setup to tell me a possible solution wich is already implemented on another Server provider (HVO).

The simples way would be a venet similar to openvz.
Is it possible to make virtual network-cards on the main-machine wich I can map to the kvm?
That would be imho the best and much more flexible way, because u don't have to tell thousends of Server Providers how they have to change theire Network-Setup.

I answer all your questions and I give you good hints. This is the support forum for Proxmox VE software. If you have question about Hetzner, ask them. no need to answer such crap, so keep friendly otherwise your account will removed.

as we are not OVH nor Hetzner we cannot tell you detail about their network security. you are simply asking the wrong people as I already wrote.

All hosting provides have to take care about their network and all needs adaption to get a usable setup with a virtualization solutions like KVM - this is not Proxmox VE specific. (And no, there is no solution like venet for KVM).

I'm sorry tom but u don't answered my questions before, u just said that I have to contact hetzner with my proxmox-setup-question (I wanted to know if there is a already implemented way to configure the IP-Addresses over Proxmox with a Network-setup wich hetzner is using) before u said that I have to change my server-provider.
Of course KVM is just a part of your product wich isn't developed itself by the proxmox-team, but I'm afraid to make any changes on KVM/Network-Setup because I don't know what proxmox does with this changes when I change something over the GUI or when I update the whole machine. Thats why I aks here for a solution how I can give my kvm an own IP-Adress when I just can use the MAC-Address of the Main-System.
A possible and helpfull answer would be, "no there is no known way to Setup your IP-Adress like that" or "(And no, there is no solution like venet for KVM)" and not, "use another Server provider". Maybe you can now understand the way I wrote my last post. U also told me about a "good solution" wich OVH is using and I thought that u know what they did and asked for that. Also a question where "change your server-provider" isn't a good answer.

Anyway, I don't wanted to be aggressive or something, but it's realy annoying getting answers on questions wich u just don't have asked.
So I'm realy sorry for that when my last post offended u or something, that wasn't my intention.

I found a way wich could probably work (try to test it later), when I post it here, could someone of proxmox-team tell me if I'm going to have trouble with a setup like that with the rest of Proxmox (updates etc.)?
Maybe you can even implement a solution because the hetzner-consumers are probably not the only proxmox-users with a network-setup like that.

I did not write "change your server-provider", I just pointed out that these provider has a more virtualization friendly and flexible network setup and you should take a look what they offer, then go to your provider and ask for the same.

you do not understand the issue. its not on our software, its on the network side from the hosting company. they needs to protect their environment and security is never always consumer friendly.

Yes I understand very well but it seems u did not understand the point of my question.
The Problem is that I just have one MAC-Address where all of my IP-Adresses r connected to.
The Solution could be changing the settings of my Provider to allow me multiple MAC-Addresses with a possible "security risk" for my provider.
OR it could be finding a way around to get my IP-Address working while using the knowen MAC-Address.
The last option is that what would be more consistent because it maybe could be implemented for all others who have this problem.
My question is just, if I find a way that works, would I be able to update my proxmox-installation without getting my settings overwritten by the update.

For some reasons the routed setup is no option, I'll try to find a workaround and tell you when I get it. Hoply it's compatible with future updates of proxmox.
@tom, yes I get it, thats why I'm here and ask for other solutions. :)
Thx for your answers guys

Has anyone, managed to get this setup working ?

Is it possible to modify my netorking to get kvm and openvz working in an environment where multiple mac's are blocked , like at hetzner ?

hi,

the simple way ist to ask your provider to give you a second mac or to add your mac to the port-security-setting of the switch your server is connected to. (thats really no big thing)
another solution is using iptables, an internal dummy-network and dnat. (thats tricky if you don´t know what you are doing)
or change your provider, upgrade service

this is really a networking and no software-issue
