I cannot login using "root" on pct console. Other users work. For root, it doesn't ask for password.

Code:
root@gen8:~# pct console 100

Connected to tty 2
Type <Ctrl+a q> to exit the console, <Ctrl+a Ctrl+a> to enter Ctrl+a itself
Library login: root

This means your console (pts/1) isn't listed in /etc/securetty.
Is it a migrated, updated or new container? For most templates the file should be updated accordingly upon creation of the container.
(Though package upgrades can overwrite it again...)

It is installed from a template derived from OpenVZ templates page (ubuntu 15.04 minimal).

You are right, the only entry is "pts/0" /etc/securetty. I'm wondering why the GUI console is using pts/0 and the CLI console is using pts/1.
