It will make my life enormously simpler if I could lay my hands on a 4.0 or 4.1 PVE iso... My one machine booted straight forward with that (HP DL320s with P400 controller), but with 4.4 and 5.2 it doesn't boot any more.

The first link is the official download archive from Proxmox, so I doesn't help me.

The second is a fabulous find! https://archive.org/download/Proxmox-ve_Released_Iso has all the iso's. I'm listing them here for the benefit of
    future searchers.

A special thanks to Marco Ardito (http://amrc.altervista.org/amrc/su-di-me/) for creating and maintaining the archive.

Although at first I thought an older version would solve my problem, it turned out that I had to add "noapic" to the kernel boot line in grub to get the server to boot.

TIP: Pressing 'e' on the proxmox boot menu allows the grub2 lines to be edited...
