Hi,

I'm a novice in this topic and would appreciate your feedback on how to improve my current setup for securing the backups & snapshots safely.

Here is my setup,

Im currently setting up PVE for running several VMs using LVM-Thin provisioning (named: Storage1)

For backup purposes I looking to install in another node Proxmox Backup Server in LAN.

How should i proceed to do backups and snapshots of Storage1 in the PBS?

Regards!

What rights should a user created on PBS have, in order for PVE nodes to fully use it as a backup target?

What packages must one install to have PBS as a possible target under storage in PVE datanceter GUI? I can see PBS as a target in PVE GUI only, if I install PBS and PVE on the same host, on other "stand alone" PVEs there is no such storage.

When adding the PBS storage in datacenter, should I opt out the nodes, that have PVE and PBS installed and running at the same time or can it be "mounted" on all nodes?

For just backup/restore (no prune on client side) you can assign an user the DatastoreBackup role on the /datastore/<datastore-id> ACL path.

Just be sure you have an up-to-date Proxmox VE 6.x installation, that's all that matters here.

The server can be access by multiple clients.
Normally you have one server somewhere in the LAN, that can be shared with all LAN hosts.
The PVE then only needs the client (which is installed by default if you run up to date package versions) and does not need any extra packages, just add the PBS server as storage, available for all nodes.

Than you for your answers.

However last answer is not clear to me.
Please confirm, that there is no issue, if a PVE and PBS run on the same host and PVE has this PBS as a backup target as well.

Also I choose "DatastorePowerUser" instead of your suggestion as I believe PVE should have the ability to remove old backups and I think it will.

There's no limitation for that. https://pbs.proxmox.com/docs/installation.html#install-proxmox-backup-server-on-proxmox-ve

But, it may not be ideal, coupling the Proxmox Backup Server and the Proxmox VE host together, VM/CT guests and their backups should normally not reside on the same machine, if the machine breaks both is lost, production state and backup.

So, if you plan to do that, I'd recommend syncing the PBS datastore to another PBS instance, for example offsite.

Tnx for hints. I do have only templates for VMs and PBS on PVE, so it's fine. And I get another quorum vote. :-)
